Donbas: The dangerous frontline of the Russia-Ukraine war. A steel manufacturing powerhouse, the region is well connected to the Sea of Azov by rivers and man-made canals. It is also known for its fertile agricultural ground and rich mineral deposits.

Pokrovsk: An important logistics hub for transportation. It is located 56 kilometres (35 mi) northwest of Donetsk. As of December 2025, the city is under Russian occupation

US Plan: The U.S.-led push to end Russia’s nearly 4-year-old war in Ukraine gained momentum late last year and is moving ahead in 2026, with leaders, diplomats and envoys traveling to a flurry of meetings to discuss a potential deal.

A losing battle: Russian forces made many significant advances in 2025. While it struggles to hold up land advance, Kyiv eyes economic and political fronts to turn around fortunes.
